Using Sustainable Aviation Fuels

EVA Air is moving toward Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050. The age of electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft is soon to arrive, but it isn’t here yet. In the meantime, using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will be a major key to reducing aviation industry emissions. SAFs can reduce total life-cycle emissions by 80% as compared to traditional fuels. However, there is currently just not enough SAF to meet demand, with exorbitantly high prices and other challenges. In order to demonstrate EVA Air’s resolve to move toward net-zero emissions, we are continuing to roll out fuel conservation measures, while also setting short, medium, and long-term SAF usage targets.
In May, 2023, a ferry flight for our new Star Alliance-liveried Boeing 787-10 was fueled with 30% SAF; and in August of the same year, one BR189 passenger flight from Haneda, Japan to Songshan, Taiwan used 40% SAF. Together, these two flights accounted for 90 tons in carbon reductions. May’s delivery was EVA Air’s first-ever flight using SAF; and August’s flight was the highest ratio of SAF used on national airlines. These two events mark important milestones on our journey to net-zero emissions. We aim to continue providing safe flights and outstanding service, while also using enhanced fuel efficiency and lower-carbon transport to do our part in slowing down global warming.

ESG Innovative Design Competition

EVA Air strives to make green living and energy sustainability a reality. In 2023, we worked with Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) to hold the EVA Air ESG Innovative Design Competition. This was a world’s-first innovation challenge focused on retired unit load devices (ULDs) including containers, pallets and associated air transport accessories. This competition helped integrate recycling more deeply into future designers’ design concepts. Simultaneously within the campus, several phased-out ULDs were redesigned to create a Mini Container Market. The combination of sustainability, social engagement, and inclusion on display won widespread praise.
In 2024, we again collaborated with CYCU to hold the 2024 ESG Innovative Design Competition. For the first time ever, we opened participation in the competition to students and faculty from universities and colleges all over Taiwan. Submitted designs used design materials such as out-of-service ULDs, cargo straps, cargo nets, and blankets. Students repositioned, re-formed, reassembled, and recontextualized these items to create wonderfully innovative Green Design. The competition was aimed at helping young designers put their skills to the test and use their limitless inventiveness to demonstrate how recycling and reuse can create new value. EVA Air sponsored 33 airfares as contest prizes; an award ceremony was launched at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park on May 17, 2024. There, the winning and finalist designs were displayed, giving a wider audience a chance to see all the students’ creativity. The ceremony also showcased the bountiful fruits that EVA Air’s ESG efforts have borne. Both CYCU and EVA Air are centered in Taoyuan City, and the city government’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) has expressed deep appreciation and support for the competition. In fact, the DCA requested that, after the exhibition wrapped up at Songshan, some of the works and ULD installations be displayed at Taoyuan’s Chung Yuan Cultural and Creative Park; starting on May 22. Through our efforts, we are helping sustainability take root everywhere.
